Collective actions in the citrus agribusiness – a comparison of farming and industrial associations
Abstract in English
The associations in the agricultural/food industry sector are important sources of information, not only to their own members but also for others agribusiness sectors. Political and/or economical pressures, resulting from collective actions within the associations are important in that they may result in changed attitudes within society, benefiting the associations members. This research paper examines the efficiency and main determining factors relating to the success of collective actions promoted by farmers and industrial associations in the citrus agribusiness. A comparison of the performance of the three most important citrus associations - ABECITRUS, ACIESP and ASSOCITRUS - was made, emphasising the differences in their strategies and approaches. It was observed that the educational leveI of the members was an important factor relating to the integration and efficiency of the groups. With development of internaI conflicts relating to strategy and priorities. There were also information handling difficulties and a high leveI of subjectivity. lt was also observed with respect to the "philosophy" of running the associations, that the industrial group followed clear rules with a standardised approach whilst the farming groups tried to gather alI the citrus growers in a large unit, resulting in a an element of disorganisation. In conclusion, from severaI variables which compose the collective actions analysis, it was able to detect that the industries association is better organised and strategic prepared to deal with actions and conflicts than the farmers associations
