Title in English
Climatic elements and ramulosis (Colletotrichum gossypii var. Cephtalosporioides Costa) development in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.var. latifolium Hutch) under field conditions
Abstract in English
The experiment was carried out under field conditions in the South Central Regional Pole of the Agribusiness Technology Agency of Sao Paulo - APTA (Agência Paulista de Tecnologia dos Agronegócios), located in Piracicaba -SP, during the 2002/2003 growing season. The purpose of this work was to identify the most important climatic elements for the development of ramulosis in three groups of cotton cultivars showing distinct characteristics regarding the reactions to the pathogen. Seeding was conducted in December 8, 2002, using the following genetic materiaIs: Coodetec 406, Coodetec 407, SureGrow 618, Fibermax 966, Fibermax 986, BRS AROEIRA, Fabrika, Makina, MG 99405, IAPAR 227-918, IAC 01-639, PR 99-123, Stoneville 474, DeltaOpal, CNPA ITA 90 and IAC 24. The experimental design was randomized blocks with 16 treatments and 6 replications. Plots consisted of 5-meter rows 0.90m apart, with 7 plants/m. Three inoculations were carried out, on the 22nd (Jan 6), 29th (Jan 13) and 43rd (Jan 27) days after emergence of plants, in order to ensure the occurrence of ramulosis in the experimental area. The genotypes were grouped according to their reaction to the pathogen and classified as resistant, moderately resistant and susceptible, so that the results could be extrapolated to other cultivars in future genetic improvement and epidemiologic studies. The groups were established through linear regression among the average disease scores for each genotype versus time. Based on the results, it was concluded that ramulosis shows a growth pattern atypical for foliar diseases, fitting the monomolecular model, and that the disease is more dependent on ideal climatic conditions for its development when attacking more resistant cultivars. On the other hand, less resistant cultivars are less dependent on the ideal climatic conditions for the pathogen and, consequently, for the development of ramulosis.
