Stability of wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) and choice of locations for selection in the conditions of the eastern region of Paraguay
Abstract in English
A study of the stability of wheat cultivars in the eastern region of Paraguay was carried out using data from the wheat regional trials conducted by the Paraguayan Wheat Research Program CMAG/DIEAF). The characterization of' the environments to study the phenotypic stability was made by evaluating the interaction of cultivars x locations, cultivars x years, and cultivars x locations x years. In the above mentioned study ten wheat cultivars were evaluated in fourteen different environments (seven locations during two years). The methodology adopted for this purpose is the one proposed by CRUZ et a1ii (1988). Significant differences were detected among the cultivars tested in relation to grain yield mean and regression deviations. As for the environmental response, no significant differences of the proposed hypothesis were detected due to the relatively high magnitude of the regression deviations. In the less promising environments a majority of the cultivars presented regression coefficients nearing the unit, whereas in the more promising environments the responses were more diversified. Most of the materials evaluated presented high deviations from linearity, with the exception of cultivars C-8055 and IAN 7. In the environmental conditions of this study C-8055 appears as the most desirable of the group due to its higher grain yield mean, regression coefficients near the unit, both in the less promising environments as well as in the more promising ones, deviations, and non-significant, linearity deviations. In the choice of locations as sites for selection of wheat cultivars in the conditions of Paraguay's eastern region, data of grain yield of the twenty five cultivars included in the regional wheat trials carried out in seven places during a period of two years were also used. The main goal in this study, based on the differential response of cultivars due to environmental variations. was to verify if there existed similarities among the locations considered, as wel1 as their intergenotypic discrimination capacity using the most representative choice of 1ocations for se1ection purposes. The measure of similarity adopted for this purpose was the correlation between pairs of locations, and the Tocher (RAO. 1952) and the sing1e 1inkage clustering methods. Considering the results of the clusterings obtained by both methods jointly, a relative coherence of c1uslering between methods during the years under evaluation was observed in relation to the pair formed by the 1ocalilies of' Co1onia Yguazú and Tomas Romero Pereira. This suggest that a considerable degree of similarity exist between these 1ocalities as far as their intergenotypic discrimination capacity is concerned. Consequently, one of these 1ocations could be eliminated, if it were necessary, without any great 1oss of information. Simu1taneously was verifyed that S. J. Bautista 1ocalion cou1d not be grouped with any of' the other places.
