Study of maize population (Zea may L.) ESALQ PB-1 in five cycles of recurrent selection
Abstract in English
The present work was carried out aiming to study the open-pollinated maize (Zea may L.) population ESALQ PB-1, in order to evaluate its genetic properties for yield (ear weight), after being submitted to one cycle of stratified mass selection and four cycIes of half-sib progeny selection (with renmant seeds). The first four cycles were carried out in Água Santa and the last of all was in CaterpiIlar and Água Santa (both areas at Piracicaba, SP). In the first cycle (stratified mass selection) selection intensity was 8.23% on the average of 243 strata, in a isolated bIock of original population. Estimates of 43.5 g/plant for mean selection diferential of strata and 456.373 (g/plant )2 for phenotypic variance among strata were obtained. Under two different selection intensities in cycle II, two subpopulations were originated, i.e., under low (10%) and high (2%) intensities, that were designated as cycle· III(a) and III (b); only the subpopulation originated from III(a) was used to continue the selection program, through selection among and within half-sib progenies. In the progeny trials, the varieties 'Piranão VD-1' (cycle 11); 'Piranão VD-2' (cycles III and IV), a sample of the original population (cycle III) and the doucle - cross Agroceres 401 and Cargill 511 (Cycle V) were used as checks. All the analysis of variance were performed for individual trials and then pooled for all sets of progenies; in cycle V a joint analysis over two locations also were presented. All the analysis, except for cycle V, were performed according to the randomized blocks design. For each cycle, the progeny means were compared with checks and estimates of several genetic parameters were obtained, such as: additive genetic variances (ô2A), heritabilities at individual plant (ĥ2) and progeny mean basis (ĥ2x), genetic coefficients of variation (CVg), variation indexes (Descrito na tese ) and also the expected gain per cycle from selection (Ĝs). The parameters estimates for the cycles II, III(a), III(b), V (Água Santa), V (Caterpillar) e V (joint) varied within the ranges: (ô2A) : 215,5 to 283,7 (g/plant)2 ; (ĥ2) : 6,0 to 14,1%; (ĥ2x) : 19,2 to 56,9; CVg: 4,1 to 6,8%; (Ĝs): 2,7 to 4,5%; b: 0,34 to 0,54; and b*: 0,49 to 1,15%. The cycle IV was characterized by atypic experimental conditions and showed parameters estimates below the others cycles, and were respectively: 54.4 (g/plant)2 ; 1.8 ; 12.7 %; 3.1 %; 0.6%; 0.19 and 0.38. Estimate of 76.8 (g/plant)2 of additive x location variance (ô2Al) was obtained for the cycle V. The general analysis of results provided the following principal conclusions: 1. the application of selection intensity high (2%), in one cycle, did not decrease the genetic variability when compared with low intensity (10%); 2. the stratified mass selection at beginning of intra-populational recurrent selection program seems to be advantageous for the subsequent cycles with progeny selection; 3. under one relatively high effective population size, the recurrent selection was effective in increasing the yield of ESALQ PB-1 population, besides permitting the maintainance of genetic variability along the cycles; 4. a expressive response is expected for yield selection in further cycles, as indicated by the genetic parameters estimates.
