Genetic variability in subpopulation of maize (Zea mays L.) obtained by divergent selection
Resumé en anglais
The present study was based on evaluation of full sib families obtained from chain crosses in four maize subpopulation submitted to divergent selection for tasseI size (NR) and ear placement (AE) and compared with progenies of the original population (ESALQ-PB1, PO). The character analized were days to silking (FF), prolificacy (PRO), plant height (AP), ear heigth (AE), tassel branch number (NR) and grain yield (PG). The experiments were planted at Londrina and Vila Velha, both in Paraná State. The estimated parameters were populations means, variance between progenies, heritability (broad sense) and correlation between the six characters. The estimated values in each subpopulation (R-, R+, E- e E+, representing selection to increase and decrease NR e AE respectively) were compared with the values estimated for ESALQ PBI-PO in order to evaluate the effect of divergent selection. It was observed that in R- selection there was a decrease not only in character (NR) but also in AP, AE and an increase in PRO. R+ selection also increased AP, AE and FF and in the divergent line E+ it was found an increase in AP, AE, NR, FF and PRO. The yield was high in all populations but without remarkable effects of the selection on this character. It was found a small increase of PG in E+. The subpopulation E- showed a small decrease in PG and the R- and R+ only a trend to smaller PG in relation to the original population. It was found an increase in the variance for the character PRO in the subpopulations R- and E+ and also for the character NR in R+. In the others characters it was observed a decrease of variance in all populations. The greater reductions were observed for the character NR in the R- subpopulation, for FF in E+ and for AP, AE and PG in E-. The heritability did not change significantly after five cycles of selection. In a general way, all populations exhibited good potential of grain yield and large variability for this character. The populations R- and E-, by having others desirable features are more indicated to be included in a breeding program The continuity of the divergent selection process may allow novel and better inferences and knowledge about the genetic bases of these populations.
