Title in English
Effects of high and low methoxyl citric pectin and cellulose on serum levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in hyperllpidemic rats
Abstract in English
The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of high (HMP) and low (LMP) methoxyl pectin and cellulose on serum levels of: a) total cholesterol; b) tryglicerides; c) HDL-cholesterol, and d) LDL-cholesterol in hiperlipidemic rats. The plasmatic levels of urea and glucose were also determined. The trial was conducted at the Laboratório de Bromatologia e Nutrição Experimental do Departamento de Economia Doméstica da Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz" (ESALQ/USP) from March throgh December, 1997. Two experiments were performed in rats (Raftus norvegicus var. albinos, strain Wistar), male adults with initial average weight of 220 to 250 g. The experiments lasted 30 days (first biological trial) and 90 days (second trial). On the first biological trial animals were divided into 13 blocks of six rats each. One group received a standard diet (control) and the remaining ones were fed on diets with different levels of pectin (HMP and LMP) and cellulose (5; 10; 15, and 20%). Body weight decreased as fiber levels increased. Cellulose treatments produced a lesser hypolipidemic effect and those with HMP provided more significant results. Diets with 10 and 15% HMP had a higher capacity to reduce the serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and urea. The second trial was based on the more satisfactory results found in the first experiment. Here animals were divided into 4 groups of 18 rats each. One group received a standard diet (control) and the remaining ones were fed on different concentrations of HMP (5, 10, 15%). Likewise the first trial, a decreased body weight was observed as pectin concentrations increased. No hypolipidemic effect reversion occurred during the trial period. Diets with 10 and 15% HMP had a more significant effect on reducing plasmatic levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LOL-cholesterol, urea, and glucose, and on the increased serum levels of the HOL-cholesterol fraction
