Spatial and temporal distribution of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr., 1794) (Lep. : Pyralidae) eggs and their parasitism by Trichogramma sp. (Hym., Trichogrammatidae)
Abstract in English
The spatial and temporal distribution of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr., 1794) eggs and their parasitism by Trichogramma sp. were studied and these aspects were correlated with climatic and phenological parameters of sugarcane with the objective of offering one more alternative for the biological control of this pest. The trials were conducted in Iracemápolis and Santa Gertrudes, State of São Paulo, Brazil, during the period from April 1984 to May 1986. Sugarcane varieties NA 56-79, SP 71-799, SP 70-1143 and SP 71-3501 were used. The climatic parameters exerted a minor influence upon D. saccharalis laying and upon the parasitism by Trichogramma sp. The number of eggs laid by the sugarcane borer and the parasitism by Trichogramma sp. varied according to the sugarcane variety analysed. D. saccharalis egg parasitism was higher on plant cane than on ratoon crops, and its intensity was greater during the sugarcane maturation period. The parasitism by Trichogramma sp. always increased in the last generations of D. saccharalis. For studies under field conditions using this parasite preference should be given to eggs laid by adults maintained in the field rather than those obtained in the laboratory on white paper and subsequently attached to the plant in the field. The parasitism by Trichogramma sp. was higher on the upper part of sugarcane, where more laying of the borer occurred and, consequently, more parasitism by Trichogramma on leaves. There was a higher tendency of parasitism on the dorsal face of the leaf, and its distribution along the leaf was uniform. Sugarcane borer laying and respective parasitism show a similar distribution in the central part as well as the edges of the cane field. Under field conditions there was a predominance of Trichogramma females, with a sexual ratio of 7.19 females 1 male.
