Introdução: O advento da Doença Renal Crônica na vida do paciente e das famílias constitui evento gerador de grande impacto, requerendo diversas formas de enfrentamento e desenvolvimento de mecanismos adaptativos. Objetivo: Compreender como se expressa a resiliência nos pacientes renais crônicos e suas famílias. Método: Estudo qualitativo, conduzido pelo referencial teórico do Interacionismo Simbólico e da Pesquisa Narrativa como referencial metodológico. Teve como cenário o Estado do Amapá, localizado no extremo Norte do Brasil. Entrevistas semiestruturadas foram conduzidas com 15 pacientes que vivenciam a experiência da terapia hemodialítica e 16 familiares destes. Resultados: A análise temática das narrativas resultou na identificação de cinco temas: A VIDA ANTES DA DOENÇA, A VIDA INVADIDA PELA DOENÇA, A VIDA TOMANDO OUTRA DIREÇÃO, A VIDA COM UM NOVO SENTIDO e A HEMODIÁLISE COMO SUSTENTÁCULO DA VIDA. Os temas revelaram o impacto ocasionado nas vidas dos pacientes e de suas famílias decorrentes da doença renal crônica e da necessidade da hemodiálise, a capacidade de enfrentamento e superação das adversidades e a determinação em transformar a experiência de sofrimento em oportunidade para crescimento e fortalecimento. Considerações finais: Este estudo ressalta a doença renal crônica como uma situação de grande adversidade para o paciente e a família, destacando aspectos que podem ser observados e fomentados nas intervenções de enfermagem, com vistas ao fortalecimento da resiliência familiar como mecanismo profícuo de enfrentamento das situações de adversidade ocasionadas pela doença. Estratégias de superação e adaptação devem ser promovidas pela enfermagem, em prol de encorajar as famílias a identificarem e buscarem recursos internos e externos em direção à recuperação e crescimento face à doença.

Introduction: The advent of Chronic Kidney Disease strongly impacts patients lives and those of their families, requiring different ways of coping and developing adaptive mechanisms. Objectives: To understand how chronic renal patients and their families resilience is expressed. Method: Qualitative study, conducted through the theoretical framework of Symbolic Interactionism and Narrative Research as methodological approach. The study was set in the State of Amapá, located in the extreme north of Brazil. Fifteen patients who undergo hemodialysis and 16 members of their families participated in semi-structured interviews. Results: Thematic analysis of the narratives resulted in the identification of five themes: LIFE BEFORE THE DISEASE, LIFE TAKEN OVER BY THE DISEASE, LIFE TAKING A DIFFERENT PATH, LIFE WITH A NEW MEANING and HEMODIALYSIS AS SUSTAINER OF LIFE. The themes revealed the impact caused by the chronic kidney disease and the need for hemodialysis in the lives of patients and that of their families, the ability to cope and overcome adversities and the determination to transform the painful experience into an opportunity for growth and strengthening. Final Considerations: This study focus on chronic kidney disease as a major adversity for patients and their families, highlighting aspects that may be observed and promoted in nursing interventions, aiming at strengthening family resilience as a meaningful coping mechanism for the adverse situations brought about by the disease. Overcoming and adaptation strategies should be promoted by the nursing team to encourage families to identify and pursue internal and external resources for recovery and for growth when dealing with the disease.
