Leishmania é um protozoário parasito causador de importantes doenças zoonóticas, conhecidas como leishmanioses. A principal forma de transmissão desse parasito é por meio da picada de insetos flebotomíneos infectados. Contudo, outras formas de transmissão têm sido estudadas, como a infecção vertical e venérea, relatadas anteriormente em seres humanos e cães. Sabendo-se que os gatos também são reservatórios do parasito, capazes de transmitir Leishmania ao vetor e participando na manutenção de seu ciclo e que a infecção por Leishmania spp. já foi relatada em diversos tecidos de gatos, se faz relevante a investigação da possibilidade da transmissão vertical e venérea nessas espécies. O presente estudo verificou a presença de DNA do parasito Leishmania no sistema reprodutor de gatos advindos de uma região endêmica para leishmaniose visceral. Um total de 302 gatos tiveram o suabe conjuntival coletado e a presença de DNA de Leishmania avaliada nessas amostras. Desses 302, 40 eram de um estudo anterior e passaram por exames sorológicos, PCR de suabe conjuntival e sangue. O sistema reprodutor de 41 gatos machos e fêmeas foi avaliado e o DNA de Leishmania spp. foi detectado em três deles, sendo os órgãos positivos o testículo, epidídimo, ovário e útero. O sequenciamento genético de duas amostras confirmou que em dois casos a espécie infectante era Leishmania infantum. Essa descoberta reforça a preocupação com infecções verticais e venéreas por esse parasito, nessa espécie de hospedeiro.

Leishmania is a protozoan parasite that causes important zoonotic diseases known as leishmaniases. The main route of transmission of this parasite is the bite of infected phlebotomine insects. However, other transmission routes have been studied, such as vertical and venereal infection, previously reported in humans and dogs. Knowing that cats are also reservoirs of the parasite, capable of transmitting Leishmania to the vector and participating in the maintenance of its cycle, and that Leishmania spp. infection has already been reported in various cat tissues, it is important to investigate the possibility of vertical and venereal transmission in this species. This study verified the presence of Leishmania DNA in the reproductive system of cats from a visceral leishmaniasis endemic area. To this end, a total of 302 cats had their conjunctival swabs collected and the presence of Leishmania DNA assessed in these samples. Of these 302, 40 were from a previous study and were subjected to serological tests, PCR of conjunctival swabs and blood. The reproductive system of 41 male and female cats was evaluated and Leishmania spp. DNA was detected in three of them. The testicle, epididymis, ovary and uterus were positive. Genetic sequencing of two samples confirmed that, in two cases, the infecting species was Leishmania infantum. This finding reinforces the concern about vertical and venereal infections in cats.
