Gestational toxemia is an important metabolic disease in sheep, having an economic impact due to the losses of matrices and fetuses, interfering in reproduction and production performances. In the final third of gestation, there are a high demand for energy and glucose, and malnutrition in this phase will lead to a greater metabolism of body fat, in order to compensate this energetic demand. However, there are a rapid increase in BHB and NEFA, which may result in a high incidence of the disease and consequent hepatic steatosis. Starch, protected fat and chromium are alternatives to increase the energy intake to prevent gestational toxemia in sheep due to the lower mobilization of ketone bodies and lower fat metabolism. We used 72 sheep, randomly distributed in five nutritional treatments: diet with low energy source (BE); with energy support as recommended by the NRC (CTL) and diets above the energy requirement with three different sources - starch (AMI), protected fat (GP) or chromium (ACR). Blood and urine samples were collected to perform metabolic profile and urinalysis analyzes. The live weight and body condition score (ECC), during gestation and lactation were also measured. The experimental was a randomized blocks design, the mean of the treatments was compared and the measurements were compared over time, throughout Tukey test with 5% significance (P <0.05), by SAS and PROC mixed, a descriptive statistic was used for urinalysis. The weight of the sheep presented difference only in postpartum, the hemogram showed no alterations. The BE diet presented greater mobilization of body reserves and greater changes in metabolic profile and urinalysis, however, there was gestational toxemia in sheep that were fed AMI and GP diets.
