O presente trabalho pesquisou, a partir da perspectiva dos Estudos Culturais, as representações sociais que emergem dos discursos dos sujeitos pertencentes à comunidade do Bonete, localizada no município de Ilhabela, no litoral norte do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil, sobre as relações existentes entre identidade cultural, turismo e desenvolvimento local. A fundamentação teórica foi construída a partir da revisão de literatura sobre os seguintes construtos: estudos culturais, cultura, identidade cultural, tradição, representação social, desenvolvimento local, participação, governança e turismo de base comunitária. A pesquisa de campo, de caráter qualitativo, se valeu de entrevistas semiestruturadas com sujeitos pertencentes a três grupos: a) proprietários de empreendimentos turísticos; b) pessoas que ocupam posições-chave; c) moradores em geral. Considerando o processo subjetivo que caracteriza o reconhecimento identitário segundo as memórias, afirmações histórico-culturais, ações e relações estabelecidas no grupo social, utilizou-se a técnica do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo como meio de suscitar as representações sociais existentes nessa comunidade. Também foram feitas observações não participantes que contribuíram para uma discussão sobre aspectos da realidade local que puderam ser notados durante o recorte de tempo desta pesquisa. As representações sociais do Bonete sobre as três temáticas centrais deste trabalho permitiram o entendimento de algumas das necessidades, motivações e expectativas dessa comunidade sobre suas condições de vida e sobre o futuro de seu território. Os sujeitos que ali vivem reconhecem que muitos aspectos de sua cultura tradicional têm sido abandonados e que as atividades turísticas representam o principal fator de crescimento econômico local. Ainda que tenham tido alguma aproximação com o turismo de base comunitária, ainda não foram implantadas formas de gestão comunitária das atividades turísticas na comunidade. Observouse uma forte identificação desses boneteiros com seu território; entretanto, eles reconhecem a pouca participação individual e coletiva nas questões que dizem respeito ao desenvolvimento de sua comunidade. Conclui-se que, para que haja desenvolvimento local endógeno e emancipatório no Bonete, é necessário que os sujeitos que ali vivem se organizem em torno de um projeto comum que valorize sua identidade e suas características culturais e naturais e que, ainda, fomentem projetos que consideram a vocação turística do Bonete e as capacidades, habilidades e competências humanas ali existentes

This paper researched, from the perspective of Cultural Studies, the social representations found in the discourse of the subjects belonging to Bonete community, located in the municipality of Ilhabela, on the northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil, on the relationship between cultural, tourism and local development. The theoretical framework was built from the review of literature on the following constructs: cultural studies, culture, cultural identity, tradition, social representation, development, local development, participation, governance, tourism and community-based tourism. The field research, qualitative, drew on semistructured interviews with people belonging to three groups: a) owners of tourist facilities; b) persons occupying key positions; c) residents in general. Considering the subjective process that characterizes the identity recognition under the memories, historical and cultural statements, actions and relationships established in the social group, we used the Discourse of the Collective Subject technique as a means to raise the existing social representations in this community. Non-participant observation also contributed to a discussion on aspects of local reality that could be noticed during the clipping time of this research. The social representations of Bonete on the three central themes of this work allowed the understanding of some needs, motivations and expectations of the community about their livelihood and the future of its territory. The subjects who live there recognize that many aspects of their traditional culture have been neglected, and that the tourist activities are the main factor for local economic growth. Although they have had some approach to community-based tourism, there have not been implemented forms of community management of tourist activities in the community yet. There was a strong identification of these boneteiros with their territory; however, they recognize the little individual and collective participation in matters that concern the development of their community. It is concluded that for endogenous and emancipatory local development in Bonete it is necessary that the subjects who live there organize themselves around a common project that enhances their identity and their cultural and natural features, and besides promote projects that consider the touristic vocation of Bonete and the human capacities, abilities and skills that exist there
