Observations and interpretations of comets in the Iberian Peninsula and Hispanic America in the seventeenth century: an investigation from printed accounts

Abstract in English
Printed accounts of comet observations made during the seventeenth century abound. They often indicated bad omens, which prompted a series of studies into their nature. Historiography has already focused intensely on reports and interpretations from northern Europe, which for a long time was seen as the cradle of modern science. This view relegated countries like Spain and Portugal, and even more so their American colonies, to a secondary role, if not an obstacle to science. The aim of this dissertation was to collect, systematize and interpret information on observations of comets made in the Iberian Peninsula and IberoAmerica during the seventeenth century, which can be found in works printed during the same period. The purpose of this survey and systematization was to demonstrate that, contrary to what the traditional narrative suggests, a great deal of observation, interpretation and debate took place in these areas.
