Abstract in English
This research studied the construction of memory and identity in the group "Folia de Reis São Francisco de Assis," from the city of Santo André, state of São Paulo, Brazil, in the metropolitan region known as ABC Paulista or Grande ABC. In order to understand the social context of this popular culture group, we begin with a historical study of the "Festejo de Reis" itself, then describe the social and historical formation of the ABC Paulista region. Before delving into the history of Folia de Reis São Francisco de Assis and examining the interviews we carried out, we discuss the theoretical devices on memory, highlighting the concepts around the construction of collective memory, by Candau (2019) and Halbwachs (1990), and around identity, understanding the rise of identity at the intersection between the subaltern and the hegemonic fields. We then recorded some of the group's "jornadas," and retold the story of the Folia de Reis São Francisco de Assis through the memories of some of its members, interconnecting the reports to the exposed theoretical concepts. This enabled us to understand which social elements make them different from other groups. We were thus able to register the memory of its participants, the "foliões," illuminating aspects of the sociocultural diversity of the ABC Paulista.
