A partir da segunda metade do século passado, em Minas Gerais, ocorreu intenso processo de dilapidação da arte sacra colonial presente nas igrejas do estado, por meio de furtos e vendas, alimentando um vultoso mercado de antiquariado, em especial dos estados de São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro. Esse mercado, por sua vez, veio a abastecer as coleções de indivíduos das elites econômicas dessas áreas. Passadas décadas, começaram a despontar paulatinamente ações de restituição desse patrimônio sacro disperso, a princípio, voluntariosas e pontuais, mas posteriormente robustecidas pela burocracia estatal, com grande destaque para a atuação do Ministério Público de Minas Gerais. Além de situar em perspectiva esse processo histórico, este trabalho propõe-se a analisar em maior profundidade, e de maneira comparada, dois casos específicos, de modo a compreender as disputas e tensionamentos existentes neles. Os casos escolhidos são o da imagem de Nossa Senhora das Mercês, originária da Igreja das Mercês e Misericórdia de Ouro Preto, e o do busto-relicário de São Boaventura, originário da Igreja de São Francisco de Assis, da mesma cidade. Como resultado, foi possível compreender em maior detalhe o contexto em que se deu a dilapidação do patrimônio sacro mineiro, e também identificar as principais contradições, tensionamentos e desafios presentes no processo de restituição.

From the second half of the last century on, in the state of Minas Gerais, there was an intense process of dilapidation of the colonial religious art from the churches, through theft and trade, feeding a huge antiques market mainly active in the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. That market supplied the collections of individuals from the economic elites of those areas. Decades later, actions at first particular and voluntary aiming the restitution of this dispersed sacred heritage began to gradually emerge, and were later boosted by state bureaucracy, with a great participation, in this regard, of the Public Prosecutors Office of the State of Minas Gerais. In addition to situating this whole process historically, the present work proposes to analyze two specific cases in depth, in order to understand the disputes and tensions present in them. The chosen cases are the one of the sculpture of Our Lady of Mercy, originally from the Church of Grace and Mercy in Ouro Preto, and the one of the reliquary bust of Saint Bonaventure, originally from the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, in the same city. As a result, we were able to comprehend in detail the context in which the dilapidation of the sacred estate from Minas Gerais occurred and also to identify main contradictions, tensions and challenges inherent to the restitution processes.
