Abstract in English
This work deals with a comparative study between the effect of two bovine semen diluters: hen egg yolk-citrate versus quail egg yolk-citrate, carried out in the Animal Husbandry Department of “Escola Superior de Agricultura “Luiz de Queiroz”, U.S.P., Piracicaba. Eighty semen colections were done by artificial vagina (Danish model), two times a week, during ten months, from just one mature bull, raised under normal conditions of feeding and management. After collection, semen samples were routinely examined through macroscopic and microscopic evaluation methods, and right away the dilution was completed for both diluters in a 1:4 proportion. Observations on spermatozoa motility percentage were carried out just after the dilution, and at regular intervals of 24 hours during 14 days (336 hours), for each sample kept at low temperature (4 to 7°C). Statistical analysis of data showed that quail egg yolk-citrate performed as well as hen egg yolk-citrate, and therefore it could be used in the practice of bovine semen preservation.
