Resumimos o resultado dos estudos dos 13 cultivares pertencentes a 3 espécies do gênero Cucurbita, tendo em vista a sua descrição botânica, em virtude de não terem sido ainda caracterizados taxonomicamente, embora largamente conhecidos e cultivados como plantas de valor econômico. Além do histórico sôbre as espécies de Cucurbita moschata, Cucurbita maxima e Cucurbita Pepo, as principais do gênero Cucurbita, juntamos a literatura a respeito dos órgãos vegetativos e florais, bem como do fruto e da semente das referidas espécies para servirem de base a um confronto com os dados obtidos dos cultivares estudados, devido à escassez da literatura concernentes aos mesmos. Os trabalhos de melhoramento dos cultivares das espécies eitadas vêm sendo realizados dêsde 1942, pela Secção de Olericultura do Instituto Agronômico de Campinas, face a importância econômica que possuem. Empregamos sementes provenientes de polinização controlada, cedidas pela Secção de Olericultura do Instituto Agronômico de Campinas, para obtenção de plantas dos 13 cultivares. O planejamento estatístico obedeceu à distribuição de blocos ao acaso, utilizando-nos dos 13 cultivares e com 10 repetições. Complementando o estudo dos cultivares, incluímos a descrição da família Cucurbitaceae, a do gênero Curcubita, bem como a descrição botânica das espécies Cucurbita moschata, Cucurbita maxima e Cucurbita Pepo, e a chave das mesmas. A descrição botânica dos cultivares baseou-se nas características morfológicas dos órgãos vegetativos e dos órgãos florais e nas características dos frutos e sementes, considerando: 1 - a forma, as dimensões, a presença de estrias longitudinais e indumento da haste principal. 2 - as dimensões e indumento do pecíolo; o ângulo formado pelas nervuras externas da base do limbo e sua grandeza; o comprimento dos seus lados (nervuras), a presença ou ausência de manchas prateadas do limbo; largura e comprimento do limbo da fôlha. 3 - as formas das gavinhas. 4 para as flôres masculinas e femininas: o comprimento do pedúnculo; comprimento do tubo e lóbulos do cálice e sua forma; comprimento do tubo e lóbulos da corola; diâmetro da parte superior do tubo da corola; diâmetro entre os ápices dos lóbulos da corola; comprimento do filête e da antera e a forma desta para as flôres masculinas; dimensões, posições, formas e indumento do ovário, comprimento e coloração do estígma, comprimento dos lóbulos do estigma, forma variável do disco nectarífero na base do estiléte, para as flôres femininas. 5 - dimensões, forma, coloração, partes, consistência e espessura da polpa do fruto. 6 – dimensões, forma, e coloração da semente e da forma do hilo. 7 - a análise estatística foi feita para alguns caracteres de valor taxonômico como: a - fôlhas: comprimento do pecíolo, grandeza do ângulo foliar da base do limbo, largura e comprimento do limbo da fôlha. b - flor masculina: comprimento do pedúnculo, comprimento do tubo e lóbulos da corola, diâmetro da parte superior do tubo da corola. c - flor feminina: comprimento do pedúnculo, comprimento do ovário, comprimento do tubo e lóbulos da corola e diâmetro da parte superior do tubo da corola. Elaboramos uma chave de determinação dos cultivares das 3 espécies de Cucurbita, tomando por base os caracteres diferenciais do ovário e as formas dos lóbulos do cálice da flor feminina, para usos técnicos e botânicos.

We summed up the results of the studies of 13 cultivars belonging to 3 species of the genus Cucurbita, taking into account their botanical description because they have not been taxonomically characterized yet, though largely known and grown for their economical value. Besides the history of the species of Cucurbita moschata, Cucurbita maxima and Cucurbita Pepo the main representatives of the genus Cucurbita, we are including the literature regarding the vegetative - and floral organs as well as the literature regarding the fruit and the seed of the above-mentioned species so as to serve as a basis to be confronted with the data obtained from the studied cultivars, owing to the scarcity of literature relative to these cultivars. The breeding works of the cultivars of the above-mentioned species have been carried out since 1942 by the Section of Olericulture of the Agronomic Institute of Campinas (IAC) in view of the economic importance they have. We used seeds from controlled pollination, given away to us by the IAC-Olericulture Section, in order to obtain the plants of the 13 cultivars. The statistical planning followed the steps of distribution at random using the 13 cultivars with 10 replications. The description of the family Cucurbitaceae and of the genus Cucurbita well as the botanical description of the species Cucurbita moschata, Cucurbita maxima and Cucurbita Pepo besides their keys were also included in order to make the study complete. The botanical description of the cultivars was based upon the morphological characteristics of the vegetative - and floral organs and upon the characteristics of the fruits and seeds as well, taking into consideration: 1 - The shape, dimensions, presence af lengthwise striae and indumentum of the main stem. 2 - The dimensione and indumentum of the petiole, the angle formed by the outer ribs at the base of the leaf blade and the angle magnitude; the length of the ribs; the presence or absence af silvery spots on tho leaf bladei; width and length of the leaf blade. 3 - The shapes of the tendrils. For the male and female flowers 4 - The length of the peduncle, the length of the tube and of the lobules of the calyx and i ts shape, the length of the tube and of the lobules of tho corolla, the diameter of the upper part of the corolla tube, diameter between the apexes of the corolla lobules, the length of the filament and the length of the anther, and the shape of tho latter for male flowers; the dimensions, positionings, shapes and indumentum of the ovary, length and calor of the stigma length of the stigma lobules, the variable shape af the nectariferous disk at the style base for female flawers. 5 - The dimensions, shape, color, parts, consistence and thickness of the fruit pulp. 6 - The dimensions, shape and color of the seed and of the hilum as well. 7 - The statistical analysis was made for some characteristics of taxonomical value such as: a - leaves: length of the petiole; magnitude of the foliar angle at the base of the leaf blade, width and length of the leaf blade. b - male flower: the length of the peduncle, the length of the tube and corolla lobules, the diameter of the upper part of the corolla tube. e - female flower: the length of the peduncle, the length of the ovary, the lenght of the tube and the length of the corolla lobules, the diameter of the upper part of the corolla tube. We drew up, for technical and botanical uses, a key to determine the cultivars of the 3 species of Cucurbita basing upon the differential characters of the ovary and the shape of the lobules of the female flower calyx.
