Abstract in English
The main objective of this work is to introduce in Brazil the microscopic technique to study soils. To attain this objective, extreme horizons of modal profiles of three different soils occurring in Piracicaba are studied through thin sections. The thin sections were obtained from horizon samples impregnated with dammar gum, according to the technique recommended by DALRYMPLE (1957) and modifications introduced by the author. In this work the following morphological characters are studied: voids, plasma, mineral grains, aggregates, glaebules, humus and fabric. Some characters are illustrated with microphotographs. Use of ocular integrator is made to determine percentual volume of mineral grains, plasma and voids. These data are confirmed by the results of calculated sample sizes and by the test of normal distribution. In conclusion differential characters of horizons are presented. Genesis of glaebules and of cutans are studied, and the later related to the illuviation processes. The importance of mineralogical analysis is evident through the results obtained and related with characterization and mineral sources of the soils.
