Title in English
Morphological, physiological, serological and electrophoretic characterization, and chemical control of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides sensu arx, isolated from bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) and jilo (Solanum gilo Radd.)
Abstract in English
Cultures of Colletotrichum isolated from bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) and jilo (Solanum gilo Radd) were characterized using serological and electrophoretical methods in an attempt to better understand the relationships between Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and its hosts. Also, the effectiveness of new chemical compounds in controlling antracnose was eval uated both in greenhouse and, in vitro experiments. Isolates from bell pepper and jilo differed with respect to apressoriurn rnorphology. In the forrner, apressoria were lobated and thin-walled whereas in the latter, they were round-shaped and thick-walled. Conidia width rather than length also could be used to distinguish the two groups. Physiological specificity was noted between the two groups of isolates: - Isolates from bell pepper were aggressive to detached fruits of both bell pepper and jilo, and had an optimal growing temperature between 24-26°C. - Isolates from jilo showed physiological specificity, being aggressive only to detached fruits of jilo, and had an optimal growing temperature between 18-21°C. Indirect ELISA tests indicated similar antigenic determinants between isolate groups. However, the two groups could be distinguished based on the electrophoretic banding pattern of esterase. Some fungicides, with the exception of benomyl, inhibited the micelial growth of the fungus "in vitro" (tricyclazole, pyremetanil, carbendazin e cyprodinil), and showed potential controlling effect of antracnose (tebuconazole).
