Abstract in English
This atudy was carried out, particularly the mounting of slides and identification of mites, mostly in the laboratory of the Zoology Department of the Agricultural College of the University of São Paulo in Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The main objetive of this study was to contribute to the knowledge of mites on plants of Paraguay. There are very few bibliographical references on this subject ana no important descriptive studies are -known. Material collection was carrieõ out on Paraguay in 29 plant spec1es at 14 locations. The method used was the technique adopted by Pritchara & :Baker (1952). Slides were mounted in Hoyer’s, meàium with a small change presentea - by Flechtmann (1967). Because of the hygroscopioity of the Hoyer' s medium the slides were luted with “Zut”, an original compound of Thorne (1935), Both, “Zut” and “Hoyer’s” gave good resulta. To help others in the identification of these mites keys were establ1shed based on the most salieh± characteristics. As a result of the investigation five families (Tetranychidae, Tenuipalpidae, Tarsonemidae, Tydeidae – and Phytoseiidae), mineteen genéra ana twenty-one species were found and identified. During the studies i t was possible - to identify a hew species, Tetranychus paraguayensis n. sp. Note: The identification of the new species - has been confirmed by Dr. Edward W. Baker of the Department - of Agriculture of the USA, through material sent to him, - type: Holotipo and Paratipo.
