Abstract in English
In the present work the Rhodesgrass scale, Antonina graminis (Maskell) (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) is considered along with the problems it causes to pastures in Brazil. The pest is widely distributed over almost the entire country of Brazil. In Brazil it is known to attack almost 100 different species of grasses. It is turning out to be one of the more serious problems of the cattle industry. It is a sucking insect which can cause considerable injure to the host grass with its feeding, occasionally resulting in death of the plant. The most efficient way to control A. graminis seems to be the biological control. The microhymenopterous parasite, Neodusmetia sangwani among the various natural enemies offers the best possibilities since it is easily reared in the laboratory, has a high index of parasitism, capacity to adapt to various ecological conditions and since it has many more generations annually than the Rhodesgrass scale. Techniques for rearing A. graminis and its parasite N. sangwani in the laboratory are given in this work. Also, observations are given on the biology and behavior of these two insects.
