Abstract in English
The present research was done in order to study the behavior of commercial varieties of beans in the State of São Paulo and foreign germoplasma with resistance antecedents to different isolates of Xanthomonas phaseoli and Xanthomonas phaseoli var. fuscans. The tests of varietal reaction were conducted under controlled greenhouse conditions. The inoculum preparation and the method of inoculating plants was that described by COYNE et al (14) with some modifications. In all the tests, observations were made from the appearance of the first symptoms through all the development of the diseases. The plants were rated for disease reaction 40 days after inoculation, following the scale described by COYNE et al (14). From the analyses of the results and observations obtained in this research, the following conclusions were drawn: - Tepary Bean (Phaseolus acutifolius var. latifolius), was resistant to the isolates of Xanthomonas phaseoli and of Xanthomonas phaseoli var. fuscans isolate. - Great Northern Nebraska Nº 1 seleção 27 was highly tolerant to the same isolates and was suggested to be used as a source of resistance for obtaining national varieties resistant to bacteria. - The Rosinha-4005, Pintado, Prêto G-1, Jalo, Mulatinho, Bico de Ouro, Roxinho, Tenderlong, Plentiful, and Pinto 72 varieties were highly susceptibles to both diseases; Idaho 1 Opaquinho, Chumbinho-3000, Arroz, Rico 23 and Goiano Precoce showed a lower grade of susceptibility. - Isolate X-2 of Xanthomonas phaseoli (Chile) was less aggressive than isolates X-1 and X-3 (Brasil) and X-4 of Xanthomonas phaseoli var. fuscans (Brasil). - No detectable changes in pathogenicity occurred in Xanthomonas phaseoli even after three successive passes through the highly tolerant host.
