Abstract in English
This study has had as its main objective to conduct an economic analysis of cotton processing costs in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The specific objectives were: to identify the principal cost components, to compare the performance of the cooperative and non-cooperative firms, to verify how costs are related to quantity processed and to gather some information about cotton marketing. The cotton processing industry in the state of São Paulo was responsible for processing 873,705 tons of cotton in 1968/69. There were 137 processing firms working at that time. The importance of this industry to the development of the textile industry and to the balance of trade of Brazil through cotton exports have justified the present research. The data were collected at the firm level using a questionnaire schedule which was filled out by interviewing 54 managers of gins. Six of these firms were cooperatives. A stratified random sample was used in such a way as to assure the inclusion in the sample of an adequate number of the various firm sizes existing in the population. Analysis of variance and multiple regression analysis were used. The first, to compare cooperative and non-cooperative firms and the latter to study economies of scale in the processing industry.
