Abstract in English
An experiment with sugar cane (Saccharum spp) was done at the Departamento de Agricultura e Horticultura da Escola Superior de Agricultura “Luiz de Queiroz”, of the University of São Paulo, with the purpose of studying the possible effects of the interval between the harvest and the planting, the size of pieces of stems and of the stalk regions, in the germination and the speed of emergency. The used variety was CB 41-76. The harvested and planted plants at the same day, stored for seven and fourteen days, were divided into pieces of stems of one, two and three buds. The plantation, in two periods, corresponding to “sugar cane of the year” and “sugar cane of one and a half year” was done in sand beds, in vegetation house, evaluating the following characteristics: percentage of germination and speed of emergency. The obtained data analyses made possible to draw the following conclusions: 1 - The buds for the planting in January-March (sugar cane of one and a half year) supported one interval between the harvest and the planting up to seven days without damaging for its germinative power. 2 - Young buds supported better the storage than old buds. 3 - As much in the planting of September-October (sugar cane of the year) as in the planting of January-March (sugar cane of one year and a half) the young buds presented bigger speed of emergency. 4 - The stalk regions did not influence in the percentage of germination when the plants were cut and planted in the same day.
