Abstract in English
Due to the recent observations made by Rodrigues (1971), who recorded the frequente swarming of Protopolybia pumila, establishing their entire cycle in a 90-100 days period, it was intended to study some of the aspects of the bialogy of this species, which is very common in the State of São Paulo. The observations evidenced that such a very short cycle is the result of a development period of about 25 days, showing four larval stages: ln this way, the complete cycle affords just three development periods or generations : in the first and second periods, there in the production of non-fertile females (female-productive period ) and in the third period, the production of fertile males and females (male-female-productive = reproductive phase). The colonies of P. pumila are founded by swarming, through a group of inseminated females (queens), followed by hundreds of non-inseminated females (workers and intermediaries) but no occurrence of males was recorded. Therefore, the evidences prove the existence of an initial and permanent pleometrosis, in a more or less constant rate of 2,5 % for the queens; 72, 5 % for the intermediaries; and 25,0 % for the workers. It was found a sexual rate of 1,7 of males - one female. The translocations of the colonies and its maintenance in “vespários” are possible, near the laboratories of work.
