Abstract in English
The use of tritiated water in direct measurement of transpiration and biomass of Pinus caribaea is discussed. The method is based on the theory of tracer dynamics in steady-state systems. Emphasis was given to theoretical, experimental and analytical aspects related to spatial and temporal evolution of the tracer in the tree. The mean residence time of water in the tree - an essential parameter for biomass determination - was studied after theoretical and experimental investigation of various methods to obtain it. A new methodology for sample preparation for tritium analysis is presented. Also presented are data on transpiration, biomass and water mean residence time, obtained under two different climatic conditions – summer and winter. It was concluded that the method can be advantageously used to determine transpiration and biomass of pine forests.
