Estudou-se a biologia de Coccus viridis (Green, 1889) (Homoptera, Coccidae) em mudas de café (Coffea arabica L.) pertencentes às variedades catuaí, mundo novo e icatu (resistente à ferrugem), sendo que os danos causados pela praga a variedade mundo novo foram avaliados através da análise de crescimento. A pesquisa foi conduzida em laboratório à temperatura de 25 ± 5°C, umidade relativa de 80 ± 10% e fotoperíodo de 12 horas. O estudo da biologia foi iniciado com infestação artificial de C. viridis em folhas novas das mudas das três variedades estudadas. As formas infestantes, de idades conhecidas, eram presas individualmente em pequenas gaiolas, possibilitando a determinação do número de instares, períodos de pré-oviposição, oviposição e pós-oviposição, longevidade média de adultos e capacidade de postura. A determinação do momento de fixação do coccídeo foi feita através da marcação de ninfas com 32P. A duração do ciclo biológico de C. viridis foi semelhante nas três variedades estudadas, sendo de 122,61 dias, 115,45 dias e 133,5 dias, nas variedades catuaí, mundo novo e icatu, respectivamente. Na avaliação dos prejuízos causados por diferentes níveis populacionais de C. viridis em mudas da variedade mundo novo através da análise de crescimento, verificou-se que 50 insetos podem diminuir a área foliar, taxa de assimilação e taxa de crescimento relativo após 90 dias da infestação.

This work aimed to study the biology of Coccus viridis (Green, 1889) (Homoptera, Coccidae) on potted coffee plants (Coffea arabica L.) of three varieties: “catuaí”, “mundo novo” and “icatu” (this last one, resistant to coffee leaf rust). The damage of the pest on the variety “mundo novo” was evaluated through growth analysis. The research was carried out on laboratory conditions: temperature of 25 ± 5°C, relative humidity of 80 ± 10% and photoperiod of 12 hours. This study was developed with an artificial infestation of C. viridis on new leaves of the three varieties; the insects, whose ages were known, were placed individually in small cages so as to allow the determination of the number of instars, pre-oviposition, oviposition and post-oviposition periods, mean longevity of adults and the ability of oviposition. The nymphs were labeled with 32P in order to determine the exact moment of the fixation of the insect on the leaves. The length of the life cycle of C. viridis was similar on the three varieties of coffee: 122.61, 115.45 and 113.5 days for the varieties “catuaí”, “mundo novo” and “icatu” respectively. On the evaluation of the damages brought about by different population levels of C. viridis on the variety “mundo novo”, through the growth analysis, one can observe that 50 insects can decrease the foliar area, the assimilation rate and the relative growth rate after 90 days from infestation.
