A autora, estudando o trabalho da mulher no meio rural, procurou mostrar qual o grau de integração da mão-de-obra feminina na produção agrícola e quais os principais fatores determinantes desta integração. Para isso, entrevistou cinco categorias, a saber: pequenos, médios e grandes proprietários, parceiros e assalariados residentes. Conclui que nas pequenas explorações a mulher tem participação efetiva e não remunerada, como membro da família do proprietário, no trabalho agrícola. Nas médias e grandes ela aparece, principalmente, como mão-de-obra volante e como membro não remunerado das famílias de parceiros que exploram parte dessas propriedades. As mulheres dos assalariados residentes dificilmente trabalham. Nos casos das pequenas explorações, onde está em jogo a sobrevivência, nem a idade da mulher, nem o ciclo da família, nem a presença de gravidez ou de crianças pequenas e tampouco o trabalho doméstico impedem a mulher de trabalhar nos campos. Conclui, também que a noção de trabalho produtivo no meio rural difere da idéia urbana, onde se associa trabalho feminino a libertação financeira, e mesmo a uma atitude de liberação do sexo feminino. No meio rural, o trabalho nos campos, não sendo geralmente remunerado, não se identifica como libertação financeira, não constitui uma atitude inovadora, mas sim é concebido como uma tradição, e é encarado como uma sobrecarga aos muitos trabalhos que são reservados às mulheres.

In analyzing the work of women in rural areas, the author focused on the degree to which women are integrated into agricultural production processes, and outlined the main factors determining this integration. She interviewed 5 types of farmers, namely, small, average and large farm owners, sharecroppers and wage earners residing on the farm. She concluded that women associated with small farm units, contribute to the production process, but as member of the farm family, they receive no remuneration. On average and large size farms, women also enter into the agricultural production process, but mainly as wage workers and as unpaid members of sharecropper families who cultivate sections of these farms. Wives of wage workers residing on large farms rarely work. On small farm units whose very existence is jeopardized, neither age, family cycle, pregnancy nor the presence of small children prevent women from working in the fields. The author also concluded that the definition given to productive work by women differs in rural areas from that given to it by women in urban areas. In urban areas, feminine work is associated with financial liberation and woman’s liberation. In rural areas where work in the fields is not remunerated, it is not identified with financial liberation, nor does it constitute a new perspective of women’s role in society. Rather it is looked upon as a tradition, and is viewed as another burden in addition to the many tasks already reserved for women.
