The objective of the present work was to study the effects of changes in soil temperature, caused by the use of polyethylene covers (bright black, blue and transparent white), on the growth of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants, var. Carioca. Soil temperatures at the depths of 2, 5, 10, 15, 25 and 40cm were measured with thermocouple thermometers every 30 minutes from 6:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. The effect of the polyethylene cover on the growth was estimated through growth analysis. As a result, the following main conclusions be drawn: - For the days analyzed, and as compared with bare soil temperature: - a - Bright black polyethylene provided maximum values which o were 4.0, 7.5 and 8.8°C lower; differences were scarcely significant for the mean values, i., e., 0.2, 0.5 and 0.6°C lower. For the minimum temperatures, the values obtained were 1.4, 2.3 and 1.5°C higher. b - Blue polyethylene provided maximum values which were 1.0, 3.0 and 2.6°C c lower; for the mean values, the o differences were 0.3, 0.0 and 1.8°C lower. Minimum temperature values were 1.5, 2.5 and 1.3°C higher. c - Transparent white polyethylene provided maximum temperature values which were 2.5, 6.2 and 6.5°C lower; mean values 1.3, 0.7 and 0.4°C higher and minimum values 3.4, 4.4 and 2.0°C also higher. - The use of bright black polyethylene as soil cover enhanced growth of the plants' aerial part, dry matter and leaf area as well, to a far greater extent as compared with the blue and white polyethylene. - The use of bright black and blue polyethylene covers resulted in an expansion of the growing period of the rood system, however causing no differences in the maximum root weights as compared with the transparent white polyethylene cover and bare soil. - The presence of a polyethylene cover on the soil seems to have affected the plants' photosynthetic efficiency, relative growth rate and trans1ocation towards the pods. - Production of dry matter in the aerial part was independent on the growth of the root system.
