Short wave solar radiation budget in a corn (Zea may L.) crop, cultivar cargill 111
Resumé en anglais
The aim of the present paper was to evaluate the effects of two patterns of plant distribution on the short wave solar radiation budget and their possible relation with corn crop growth. The patterns adopted were: a standard distribution with 1.00m between rows and 0.20 m between plants in the row; and a quincuncial distribution, maintaining nearly the same plant population. Short wave solar radiation measurements were taken at maximum crop growth. The global radiation measurements were taken 1.00m above the crop top; the diffuse radiation was taken 0.20m above ground level, under the canopy. The measurements were taken wi thi n the bands: 0.3 to 3.0μm and over 0.7μm, under clear sky days. "Sunflecks" were measured at ground level. The crop growth was followed up by height, dry matter and leaf area weekly measurements. Determinations were made of photosynthetically active radiation (with and without sunflecks), reflection coefficient and transmitted radiation through the canopy. More effective interceptation of PAR was found to occur in the quincuncial pattern, regardless of "sunflecks" determination, indicating that this pattern provided the best plant distribution. The quincuncial distribution led to shading of the crop as from the 43rd day after planting, caused by the greater height of the plants in this treatment as compared to those in the conventional treatment. The grain yield in the quincuncial treatment was 12.5% higher than in the conventional treatment, though no evidence of this was shown in a period of 103 days after sowing, as based on the values for dry matter produced and accumulated in the grains. The higher grain yield can be fully explained by the fact that the crop in the quincuncial treatment presented modifications in the plant architecture as to distribution and angle of the upper leaves (which accounts for the plant height), in addition to a smaller thickening of the leaves, evidenced by growth measurements and by the radiation balance during the grain growth stage.
