Title in English
Soil water balance and water consumption by an irrigated bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) crop
Abstract in English
The experiment, was carried out, in the experimental fields of the Physics and Meteorology Department of the Escola Superior de Agricultura “Luiz de Queiroz” ESALQ/USP, Piracicaba (SP) Brasil. Actual (ETR) and maximum evapotranspiration (ETM) values were determined for irrigated beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) by means of soil and climatologic water balance respectively. Results were compared with the reference evapotranspiration values (ETo) estimated by the Penman method, Modified Penman method, Thornthwaite method and Class “A” pan method, in order to determine crop coefficients (Kc) in the development stages of the crop cycle. The following could be conclued: a) mean values of actual evapotranspiration were higher than mean values of the maximum evapotranspiration calculated by Penman, Thornthwaite and Class “A” pan methods. Modified Penman method values, however did not present difference; b) mean values of crop coefficient (Kc) calculated from Penman and Thornthwaite methods were not good when compared with the FAO recommended values but, from the Modified Penman and Class “A” pan methods results presented similar behavior as the recommended by FAO; c) deep drainage values for the studied period were neglegible and; d) the bean crop showed to be viable during the winter period in this region.
