Questões ambientais

The interface between environment and international trade: analysis for Brazilian agricultural trade with the European Union

Abstract in English
This research comprises two papers. The first presents the environmental issue and the main mechanisms found to coordinate this topic in trade relations. One of the main findings of this critical review is to show that, despite the environmental issue emerging in some of the instances of the World Trade Organization, this still needs a specific agreement dealing with this issue. The second seeks to identify whether the European Union's environmental concerns have affected Brazil’s trade performance with its member countries. Therefore, it is proposed the development of a novel variable, named “environmental image”, to capture the sensitivity of countries importing agricultural products to the environmental concerns. The variable was developed using the data mining methodology, based on news published about environmental issues in one of the world's leading newspapers, The New York Times. This option makes it possible to check with less time lag the potential that environmental issues must influence trade. The variable can verify with high frequency the potential that environmental issues have to impact trade flows. This variable is validated through a gravity trade model to test the impact of environmental perception in the EU on the trade flows of Brazilian agribusiness products. The results obtained denote that there are significant statistical effects about the negative news on the trade flow from Brazil to the selected countries of the European Union.
