Title in English
Agricultural modernization and income distribution in the State of São Paulo in 1980
Abstract in English
The main purpose of this research was to analyze the structure of the primary sector in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, using a set of variables related to agriculture modernization in 43 homogeneous microregions. Another objective was to study the possible impact of agriculture modernization on income distribution. The basic regional unit studied was the microregion, according to Demographic and Agricultural Censuses (1980). Central tendency and inequality measures of the income distribution were computed. Three factors were obtained by factor analysis applied to 30 modernizations variables estimated for each one of the microregions. By using factor scores it was possible to group the 43 microregions in 8 Agricultural Zones, with distinct characteristics. lt was shown that agricultural modernization contributes to increase the average and median income and to decrease the absolute poverty level. The average income is positively associated to inequality of income distribution; so there is an indirect and positive relation between modernization and inequality. On the other hand, it is possible to verify that there is a direct and negative effect of modernization on inequality. The contrast of these influences results in absence of statistically significant relation between modernization and inequality in the agricultural sector of the State of São Paulo.
