MERCADO INTERNO
Title in English
Domestic market for citrus fruit
Abstract in English
The purpose of this thesis is to characterize, measure and analyze the domestic market for cítrus fruits in the 1990s. The study is focused on the state of São Paulo and two products: fresh citrus fruits and orange juice. Initially, the evolution of the domestic market of citrus fruits from 1960s until 1980's and its changes in the 1990s are reviewed. Secondly, the study describes, analyzes and measures the marketing channels for fresh citrus fruits and orange juice. It concludes that the supply of citrus fruits for domestic market expanded in the 1990s, stimulated by economic growth in Brazil and by excess of orange production in state of São Paulo. This growth in the domestic market promoted changes in the traditional marketing structure as well as the entry of new industries producing not-from- concentrate orange juice. The behavior of consumers also changed during this period. Orange is stilling the mostly consumed fruit in the majoríty of the metropolitan regions in Brazil. However, this consumption is decreasing relatively as the supply of other fruits and fruits juices in general increases. The third part of the study aims to understand the operational aspects of the market. The study estimares the marketing margins rates and price and income elasticities of demand, analyses the price causality and the intensity of price transmission between market levels. The study concludes that, when supply of orange increases, the retail margin also increases, while a reduction is observed in the growers share in the final price and m the wholesale margin. Income increases, in the long run, tends to improve the consumption. ln short term, however, the price is a more determinant of orange consumption. Prices shocks initiate either at retail or at grower Ievels. The wholesale sector played a passive role in term of shocks, receiving influence from variations of prices from the grower and the retail. The present thesis suggests that future researches in this sector must be directed to increase its competitiveness in the domestic market for fresh citrus fruits and its derivatíves.
