Minimum detectable activity for radioisotope gamma-ray emitters in aqueous samples
Abstract in English
The photopeak detecti:on effi ci:ency was detennined for aqueous samples from 5 ml to 25 ml in glass tubes and from 250 ml to 2500 ml in Marinelli beakers, as a function of garnma-ray energy within the 0.2 to 1.5 MeV range, for a 3 x 3 well type (7/8 diameter x 1 ½ depth) NaI (T1) scintil lator crystal. The detection efficiency for samples of 25 ml in glass tubes was 1.4 times lower than that found for samples of 5 ml, independently of the garnma-ray energy. In Marinelli beakers, samples of 2500 ml and 500 ml showed similar results. Wi: thi n the gamma-ray energy range studi ed, the detection efficiency in Marinelli beakers of 2500 ml is from 8 to 4 times lower than that for detection in glass tubes of 25 ml, and from 11 to 6 times lower in relation to the glass tube of 5 ml. The MarinelH beaker lower detection efficiency when compare d wi th the gl ass tube is compensa te d by the larger volume use d in the measurement of thi s radioisotope acti vi ty. Base d on the sarne background radiation times, the time necessary for detection of the sample i n a Marinelli beaker of 2500 ml to a chi eve a given varia ti on coeffi cient, is of the order of 100 times 1 ower than tha t a chi eved wi th a gl ass tube of 25 m1. The specific activity needed to achieve a given variation coefficient is from 44 to 84 times lower when using a Marinelli beaker of 2500 ml instead of a glass tube of 25 ml, with the sarne times for sample detect"ion and back-ground radiation i:n both techniques. When comparing detection in a Marinelli beaker of 2500 rnl with that in a glass tube of 25 ml, the ratio is 12 to 23 times. The use of chemi cal methods wi th 100% extraction efficiency to reduce the sample volume would be advantageous for radioisotopes which are low energy gamma-ray emitters. The volume reduction from 2500 to 25 ml, in the 0.2 to 1.5 MeV range, would reach specific activities 8.3 to 4.3 times lower than the direct detection in a Marinelli beaker of 2500 ml; if the volume is reduced to 5 ml, it can be 11.4 to 5.9 times lower than direct detection.
