Analysis of milk production in switchback experiments using maximum likelihood method
Resumé en anglais
In one of his studies about switchback experiments, GODOI (1983) noticed that there is a correlation betweem periods in the milk production data, and presented an analysis based on the generalized least squares method, using a biased estimator to the coefficient of correlation. The aim of this thesis is to present a proposal to data analysis of milk production in switchback experiments, using the maximum likelihood method, based on the scheme of treatments proposed by LUCAS (1956) and on the following model, proposed by GODOI (1983): yijk = μ + Pj + tk + εijk where yijk is the observation of the k-th treatment applied (k-1,2,3) to the i-th individual (i=1,2,. . . ,ó) in the j-th period, (j=1,2,3) , μ is a constant, Pj is the effect of the j-th period, tk is the effect of the k-th treatment, and εijk is the error term, so that εijk = ρεi(j-1)k + eijk, where ρ is the coefficient of autocorrelation and ⎸ρ ⎸ < 1; eijk has the distribution N ∩ (0,ó2). The method consisted in making the analysis of variance and the "F" test, through the parameters estimated by the of maximum likelihood method for milk production data in switchback experiments. A computacional program was elaborated for the developed me.hod using the CM proceeding of the SOC Scientific Software, nowadays NTIA. The data used in the developed method were the same used by GODOI (1983). They refer to the fortnightly average production of 144 Dutch cows in all their usefull periods for switchback experiments. Five hundred trials were simulated from those data, with and without effects of treatment, in order to study the power of the "F" test. on those experiments. Considering the correlation between periods, we concluded that the developed method is an alternative to the analysis of milk production in switchback experiments, because the test to observe the effects of the treatments proved to be as powerfull as the test developed by GODOI (1983), which is more powerfull than the test based on analysis of LUCAS (1956).
