Abstract in English
In this study, a periodic regression analysis is done of monthly quantities of rainfall in Grajaú County, Maranhão State during the period 1914-1958. The logarithmic transformation log(x+35) is applied to the original data with months assumed to be equivalent to 30 days. Statistical analyses were conducted using matrix algebra and electronic data processing equipment. A computer printed of the program used is found in the Appendix 3. Results of analyses of variance demonstrate the stability of harmonics components related to each linear contrast pk and qk. The waves with periods of four, six and twelve months were statistically significant, and the annual wave predominated. The regression equation, obtained from the transformed data, is given as: ŷt = 2.0367 + 0,4336 cos (30 t - 47,9165)° + 0,0668 cos (60 t - 226,0739)° + 0,0402 cos (90 t - 300,1334)°. Approximately 99.75% of the variance in monthly precipitation is explained by the model. The annual wave alone is responsible for 95.12% of the total variance. The regression equation shows that maximum rainfall occurs in March and minimum rainfall in July.
