Abstract in Portuguese
Resistência a Exserohilum turcicum ( Pass.

Reactions of maize (Zea mays) of Exserohilum turcicum (Pass.) Leonard & Suggs and variability of the pathogen
Abstract in English
The purpose of this work was to evaluate, under green house condition, the effect of a phenotypic recurrent selection cicle in progenies of popcorn Composto Indígena, for resistance to E. turcicum (Pass.), and to study the variability of the pathogen. For the production of inoculum, the pathogen was cultivated on lactose-casein-hydrolysate agar medium (LCH), incubated at 21°C, in the absence of light during 10 (ten) days. The inoculation of the plants was made by depositing 0,5 ml of suspension of conidia standardized to 5 x 103 conidia/ml, in the leaf whorl of the plants in a stage of 4 to 5 crue leaves. The evaluation of the reactions of the plants to the pathogen was performed 14 days after the inoculation, using as criterion the type of reaction shown by the plants. The results obtained for the progeny tests of the popcorn lines obtained from Composto Indígena showed that in a phenotypic recurrent selection cicle significant differences were found in the levels of resistance to E. turcicum. A considerable increase in resistance of progenies in relation to the original population was observed. The isolates of E. turcicum um tested behaved differently when inoculated in the distinct hosts. Through the common corn cultivar Iw, with monogenic resistance, it was possible to detect different E. turcicum um races. Some isolates of the pathogen caused a susceptible type reaction caracterized by necrotic lesions in this host, while for other isolates this same host showed a resistance reaction caracterized by clorotic flecks or no reaction at all. The cultivar F-352, with multigenic resistance to E. turcicum, showed a high level of resistance to all the isolates tested. The Composto Indígena showed segregation in relation to types of reaction when inoculated separatedly with the different isolates, showing high level of resistance to the isolates tested
