Eucalyptus canker caused by Cryphonectria cubensis: its dynamic, quantification and losses evaluated in an Eucalyptus grandis plantation
Resumé en anglais
With the objective of obtaining information about the dynamic of the Eucalyptus canker caused by Cryphonectria cubensis (Bruner) Hodges, as well as its quantification and losses associated, a natural occurrence of the disease was studied in a progeny test of Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden (Coff's Harbour) where the disease was assessed yearly from the second year of the plantation (1981) to the end of the cycle (1988). Among the epidemiological models tested (logistic, monomolecular and Grompertz), the monomolecular model was the one that fitted best the data, indicating that, although the disease is teoretically a compound interest disease, its dynamic, for the local conditions of the experiment, is very slow and could assume characteristics of a simple interest disease. A sudden rise in the infection rate at the age of 60-72 months old was verified. Attempts were made to associate this phenomenon with the regional climatic data and it was discussed the possible role of the phenologic stage of the plantation. It was found significant incidence severity relationships at the progeny level, indicating the possibility of estimating severity based on incidence. Also, the relations did not vary from year to year. It was also an association between canker age and a reduction in the growth rate for trees with DBH between 5 and 10 cm. Trees with three different canker ages were compared: trees infected at two, four and seven years, respectively. Trees that became infected at the age of 2 and 4 years showed significant reduced volumetric increase rate than healthy trees pertaining to the same DBH class. However, this was not statistically significant for trees with DBH above 10 cm despite the fact that healthy trees showed the highest rates of volume increase.
