Detection, incidence and effects of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in common bean seeds (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)
Abstract in English
The present work was carried out with the following objectives: to establish an alternative method for detection of S. sclerotiorum in common bean seeds; to assess the ocurrence of this fungus in common bean seed samples; to correlate the presence of fungal sclerotia in the inert matter and the incidence on the respective seed sample; to assess the effect of S. sclerotiorum on the initial development of bean seedlings. Based upon studies carried on differents substrates (blotter and paper towel), temperatures (5, 15 and 20 ± 2° C) and light period (12 hours light and dark continuous), it was concluded that the "Blotter test", under 15° C incubation temperature in the dark for 14 days, is a feasible alternative for the detection of S. sclerotiorum in common bean seeds; With this procedure it was possible the detection of the pathogen on 35,1% of the assessed samples, originated from fields with white mold ocurrence. A correlation between the amount of sclerotia present on the inert matter and the incidence of S. sclerotiorum on the respective seed sample was not observed. When germination tests were carried out in laboratory and emergence test under field conditions, no damage on the initial development of seedlings originated from naturally infected seeds, with incidence of S. sclerotiorum ranging from 0,50 to 2,25%, was observed. The pathogen was not able to cause reduction on germination of seeds inoculated with fungal mycelium even with infection observed higher than that occurring in naturally infected samples.
