Occurrence and fitness of iprodione-resistant strains of Alternaria dauci (Kühn) Groves & Skolko
Abstract in English
Iprodione resistant strains of Alternaria dauci which were able to grow on agar medium with iprodione at 4000 µg/ml, were detected. Conidial production of the resistant strains on agar media was usuaIIy smaIIer when compared to that of the sensitive strains and the resistance characteristic was retained after several subcuItures on a fungicide-free medium. The appearance of spontaneous resistant sectors was reIativeIy easy in A. dauci sensitive strains after prolonged incubation of the myceIial discs on the iprodione - containing medium. Sectors obtained from severaI strains at some fungicide concentrations were seIected and examined for the growth capacity on iprodione at 1000 µg/ml. The resuIts showed a great variabiIity among sectors, even with those sectors originated from the same isolate and concentration. FungaI variant resistant to iprodione showed cross resistance to the aromatic hydrocarbon fungicides dicloran and quintozene and to the dicarboximide procymidone. With respect to the fungicide efficiency, it was found that polyoxin, iprodione, captafol and triphenyl tin hydroxide were the best in inhibition of the mycelial growth of sensitive strain. For the resistant strain, however, the more efficient were captafol and polyoxin. Seed inoculations of several varieties of carrot with resistant and sensitive strains of A. daucishowed slight differences in pathogenicity, due to the high spore concentration (103 spores/ml) used. The most resistant varieties were Kuronan, Brasilia and Kuroda. The fungaI spore concentration was important for the detection of differences among A. dauci strains (sensitive and resistant), through the seed inoculation tests. At the concentration of 101 and 102 spores/ml, the sensitive strain was more pathogenic than the resistant one, but at the higher concentrations, the differences tended to disappear.
