Title in English
Evaluation of varietal resistance and response of wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) to chemical control of powdery mildew, brown spot and leaf rust
Abstract in English
Besides to study the relationship between the wheat infection by Cochliobolus sativus (Helminthosporium sativum) and the plant age under greenhouse conditions it was analysed the reactions of new lines and cultivars to Erysiphe graminis f. sp. tritici and to C. sativus with artificial inoculation under field greenhouse conditions. The reactions to Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici were evaluated under field conditions. It was also verified the behaviour of the cultivars under field to the most important diseases and their response to fungicide treatment in four sites of the State of São Paulo. The results showed that the cultivars IAC 5 (Maringá) and Alondra 4546 were similarlly suscetible to C. sativus in leaves showing an increase of the susceptibility starting from the initial stages to the terminal stages of the growth and that the symptoms in the nodes were more intensive on the cultivar IAC 5 and the symptoms in the stems were more severe on the cultivar Alondra 4546. No cultivar showed immunity to C. sativus but the cultivars BH 1146, IAC 18, CNT 8 and IAC 25 and the new wheat lines IAC 32, IAC 33, IAC 40, IAC 44, IAC 45, IAC 50, IAC 64, IAC 69 and IAC 160 presented good resistance at the seedling stage under artificial inoculations. Under field conditions and artificial inoculation the cultivars CNT 8, BH 1146, IAC 18 and the new lines IAC 30, IAC 48, IAC 51, IAC 53, IAC 62, IAC 63 and IAC 64 showed the best performance as compared with other lines concerning to infection by C. sativus in both years of the study. The lines IAC 29, IAC 65, IAC 60, IAC 61 and IAC 67 were the most resistant to powdery mildew among all of them, under field and greenhouse conditions. Concerning to the resistance to P. recondita the new lines IAC 32, IAC 35, IAC 36, IAC 46, IAC 48< IAC 50, IAC 51, IAC 53, IAC 54, IAC 62, IAC 63 and IAC 64 showed good resistance, with reduced area of leaf attack under field conditions. The spray of the fungicide on wheat plants was efficient in controlling diseases under field conditions but pnly sometimes improved significantly the yield. Climatic conditions number of days from emergence to maturation of each cultivar and date of plant infection probably affected the results. Over the period of 3 years, at 4 localities with different wheat cultivars, Alondra 4546 and Anahuac showed the best response to fungicides spray, following by the cultivar IAC 17.
