Title in English
Pathogenic, cultural, serological, and electrophoretic comparisons among tomato and potato isolates of Alternaria solani and pathogenic variability of A. solani f. sp. lycopersici N.F.
Abstract in English
Pathogenic, cultural, serological and electrophoretic comparisons were made among tomato and potato isolates of Alternaria solani. Pathogenicity tests on tomato plants showed that only congenial isolates induced typical disease symptoms, suggesting the existence of physiologic specialization and the nomenclature A. solani f. sp. lycopersici for the tomato isolates. In addition, the tomato isolates showed smaller capacity for starch hydrolysis, greater frequency of resistant sectors to iprodione and polyoxin fungicides, greater growth on culture medium, greater difficulty for sporulation in vitro and serological and eletrophoretic differences, in relation to the potato isolates. Pathogenicity tests of 10 A. solani isolates from tomato on 12 varieties of tomato plants evidenced the occurrence of pathogenic races, in terms of aggressiveness and virulence (sensu VAN DER PLANK, 1968) within A. solani f. sp. lycopersici.
