Serological characterization of white patovars of Xanthomonas campestris and reactions of mango trees (Mangifera indica L.) inoculated with Xanthomonas campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae (PATEL, MONIZ & KULKARNI, 1948) ROBBS, RIBEIRO & KIMURA, 1974
Abstract in English
A comparative study with three pathovars white of Xanthomonas campestris was carried out to verify it they belong to the same serological group. The following pathovars were studied: Xanthomonas campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae, Xanthomonas campestris pv. manihotis and Xanthomonas campestris pv. ricini. Artificial inoculation X. campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae on seventeen mango varieties, using multiple needle technic was also carried out looking for genetic resistance. The symptons were evaluated 15, 30 and 45 days after inoculation with a 1 to 5 scale. The employed serological technic showed that it can be used efficiently to differentiate the bacterial pathovars. The MJA-1 medium (cycloheximidae, Bacto-Agar and water) used was highly specific and efficient in the formation of clear and well defined bands of precipitation. The serological comparative study showed that three pathovars of X. campestris belong to different serotypes, because the homologous reactions between its antigen (AT) and antisera (AS) were positive and the heterologous were negative. The precipitation lines of each AT and AS homologous showed specific characteristics, with three lines for X. campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae, two lines for X. campestris pv. ricini and one line for X. campestris pv. manihotis. The inoculation of seventeen mango varieties with X. campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae showed that only the 'Jasmim' presented a moderated susceptibility, being the other varities susceptible or highly susceptible. Thus, none of the varieties can be indicated as a source of resistance to the pathogen.
