Abstract in English
Reactions of lines and hybrids of corn to one isolate of Helminthosporium carbonum Ullstrup were studied according to average lesions they caused in the field and greenhouse conditions. F1 hybrids showed larger average lesions than those observed in their respective resistant progenitors and smaller ones than those formed in susceptible progenitors. The type of lesions of F1 in their form, average size and the presence of chlorosis was.different from that presented by the resistant and susceptible progenitors. Using as a criterion for evaluation the type of lesion induced by the pathogen and characterised by its form, pigmentation, average, size and presence of chlorosis, it was possible to determine one type of “Intermediate Resistance” for the heterozygous F1 hybrids. The analysis of F1, F2 and backcrossings generations, resulting from crossings of a resistant line 20A-2 with susceptible lines 929-B5 and 316-81, and a resistant line 483-B4 with a susceptible 929-B5 made it possible to determine that inheritance for resistance is controlled by a pair of genes with partial dominance. By studying sporulation of the pathogen on leaf segments with lesions which had been kept in a moist chamber, it was found that the initial intensity of the pathogen sporulation was affected by type of lesion and the age of the host tissues. Sporulation in resistant segregating progenies was initiated much later and has a lesser sporulation intensity when compared with that observed in susceptible plants, thus indicating that studies about sporulation in moist chambers may provide valuable information on evaluation of the degree of resistance of plants to H. carbonum. After serial passages of the pathogen obtained from line 929-B5 through susceptible and resistant hosts, there was a tendency of isola tes from larger lesions to form larger lesions in susceptible hosts more frequently than those formed by isolates from smaller lesions. Passing the isolates in a resistant host four consecutive times revealed a tendency for the some isolates to lose their pathogenicity in a susceptible line. However, four passages of the isolates through a. resistant line was not sufficient to substantiate the presence of any “variant” pathogenic to a resistant line 20A-2. Line 20A-2 proved to be more resistant than• line 483-B4. Similarly, heterozygous hybrids which had line 20A-2 as a resistant progenitor were more resistant than those in which resistant line 483-B4 was used as a progenitor. Thus, line 20A-2 was considered more promising as a source of resistance than 483-B4 for breeding purposes.
