Abstract in English
It was evaluated the influence of cotton seed density on its quality and health condition, and on the originated plant, during four years of cotton cultivation. Seeds of the IAC 17 and IAC 18 cultivars were separated in the following density classes: less than 0.90 g/cm3, from 0.90 g/cm3 to 1.00 g/cm3, from 1.00 g/cm3 to 1.05 g/cm3, and greater than 1.05 g/cm3. The most dense seeds (greater than 1.00 g/cm3) presented better physical and physiological quality than the less dense seeds (lower than 1.00 g/cm3), when the weight of 100 seeds, the germination and vigor were considered. In field conditions, these seeds also originated a higher percentage of seedling emergence, which influenced the plant population and yield. This influence did not remain on the physiological quality of the yielded seeds, which were evaluated by germination test. The best health condition was also observed by the most dense seeds (greater than 1.00 g/cm3). The less dense seeds (lower than 1.00 g/cm3) showed greater incidence of Botryodiplodia theobromae, Fusarium spp., Rhizoctonia sp. and total score of fungi. There was no influence of the seed density class on the health condition of the yielded seeds. Pathogenicity tests were carried out for eight Fusarium species on cotton seedlings and bolls of the IAC 20 cultivar. These Fusarium species were isolated from cotton seeds. F. equiseti, F. fusarioides, F. moniliforme, F. oxysporum, F. semitectum, F. solani, and F. xylarioides were pathogenic to seedlings in laboratory conditions. In greenhouse conditions, these species demonstrated less pathogenicity to cotton seedlings. However the following species presented pathogenicity to cotton bolls: F. equiseti, F. fusarioides, F. moniliforme, F. oxysporum, F. sambucinum, F. semitectum, and F. xylarioides. These species were detected in the seeds from these inoculated bolls.
