The objectives of this work were to know the inheritance of the corn stalk resistance to the rot caused by Colletotrichum graminicola; to study the methodology of pathogen inoculation and of symptom evaluation; and to verify the correlation between the genetic systems that confer resistance to the plants during different phases of their development and in different organs affected by the fungus. The work revealed that the inoculation of the fungus in the corn stalk made 15 days before flowering with evaluation made 43 days after inoculation is recommended, because the evaluation of the symptoms at more advanced phases of development of the plant can be more difficult due to the occurrence of insects in the stalk. All the symptoms evaluation criteria studied for stalk rot were shown to be highly correlated. The criteria utilized in the study of the inheritance to the rot caused by the pathogen of stalk resistance were based on the percentage of stalk area affected by the fungus and in the number of internodes with more than 50% of the affected were, both evaluations being made up to ear height. The genetic mechanisms that confer resistance to the seedling leaves, to the adult plant and to the stalk were different. In adult plant leaves, the genetic mechanism that confers resistance to the leaf blade was different of the one that controls resistance in the leaf midrib. The study of the resistance was done in 15 families originated of a diallel cross among six inbred lines with different levels of resistance. Each family was constituted of six generations i.e. the two inbreds, one F1, one F2 and the two backcrosses to the paternal inbreds. The results showed the occurrence of additive and dominant genetic effects in the studied families. The dominant genetic effect was prevalent for susceptibility. Based in the additive genetic effect found in the majority of the families studied, the results suggest that simple breeding methods, like mass selection, should be efficient in a breeding program seeking resistance to stalk rot caused by the mentioned pathogen. Some inbreds showed genetic variability as to resistance to the pathogen, both in seedling leaves and adult plant stalk, indicating possibility selection within the inbreeds aiming to increase their resistance level.
