Effect of seed treatment with fungicides on germination, stand establishment, disease development and grain yield in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)
Abstract in English
Wheat diseases including that one?s transmitted by seeds are very important in our conditions. Therefore, several trials were carried out under laboratory and field conditions in order to verify the effectiveness of wheat seed treatment with fungicides to control diseases of this crop. Protection fungicides (thiram, captan and PCNB) and systemic fungicides (carboxin, pyracarbolid and triadimefon) were used. Several measures were made up on three wheat cultivars to evaluate the effectiveness of the fungicides on germination, emergence, plant growth, disease control and yield. Carboxin seemed to be phytotoxic to the cultivars BH-1146 and Sonora-64 under laboratory conditions causing germination decrease. It was observed reduction in plant length from seed treated with triadimefon. This product gave good control of powdery mildew, (Erysiphe graminis f. sp. tritici), under a house of wire screen conditions, but the plants showed late growth in the first stages of their development. In a general way, fungus populations were reduced by seed treatment. Under field conditions wheat seed treatment with thiram and captan improved emergence but no significant differences on the number of spikes, yield (kg/ha), weight of one thousand seeds, and hectolitric weight were observed between treatments and control. However, the captan treatment showed yield increase in one experiment. The three cultivars showed similar behavior when used the studied fungicides in seed treatment, under field conditions.
