Title in English
Protection of sorghum plants (Sorghum bicolor), yellow passionfruit (Passiflora edulis) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) against fungal and bacterial plant pathogens by Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Abstract in English
The aim of the present work was to use the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Fleischmann bakers yeast) to control fungal and bacterial plant pathogens in sorghum, passionfruit and eucalyptus plants. Sorghum experiments were carried out under field conditions and the plants were inoculated with the pathogens Colletotrichum graminicola or Exserohilum turcicum. The sorghum cultivars Tx 398B (susceptible to C. graminicola) and 9107053 (susceptible to E. turcicum) were used as test plants. The yeast cell suspensions were at the concentration of 25 mg/ml and were sprayed 24 hours before or after the inoculations. Applications of yeast suspensions and fungicide (Tilt - propiconazole) were also carried out weekly. Control treatments were represented by inoculated and not inoculated plants. The experiments were evaluated weekly to obtain the disease progress curve for each treatment. At the end of the experiment, the grain production in each treatment was evaluated and it was possible to observe that weekly spraying of yeast cell suspensions reduced disease severity in sorghum plants to both pathogens and caused an increase on grain productivity that was equivalent to the chemical treatment. For the passionfruit, yeast cell suspensions (25 mg/ml) were sprayed onto the plants 24 hours before or after the inoculations of the bacteria Xanthomonas campestris pv. passiflora. The results showed a reduction in the number of local lesions in both treaments with yeast and a reduction in the number of systemic Iesions only in the treatment where tbe yeast suspension was sprayed 24 hours before the inoculation with the pathogen. Eucalyptus seedling were inoculated with the necrotrofic fungus Botrytis cinerea, and incubated under two temperature conditions at 15°C and 19°C. Besides that the treatments were also subdivided in other two treatments, one having eucalyptus seedling with healthy leaves and other one having seedlings with leaves exhibiting some necrotic spots (maximum of 2mm), caused by chemical or mechanical injury. It was observed an efficient control of the pathogen where the yeast suspensions were applied 24 hours after the fungus at the temperature of 19°C on the healthy seedlings. On the other hand, the yeast tcells were not effective in controlling the disease when the seedling with necrotic tissue or maintained at temperature of 15°C were used. The results shown in this work point out the absence of specificity in the control of different plant pathogens by S. cerevisiae, and the protection effect were inespecific to the host plant. Finally, the grain production by sorghum plants was not reduced when the yeast cell suspensions were used to protect the plants indicating the possibility of using S. cerevisiae under field conditions in studies to control plant pathogens.
