Abstract in English
The variability of Verticillium albo-atrum Reinke & Berth. and the reaction it causes in some weeds were studied. Experiments for variability were carried out in a greenhouse; the pathogen was inoculated in tomato plants variety Santa Cruz cv. Kada. The susceptibility of 38 weeds was determined by inoculating them with a pathogenic isolate of Verticillium albo-atrum obtained from Hibiscus esculentum L. During the distributional study of the pathogen, the Verticillium Wilt was encountered in all regions where tomatoes are grown. No physiological specialization at race level was found among the 21 isolates of Verticillium that were employed in the experiments. The isolates differed in their aggressiveness. Several weeds showed themselves susceptible to the pathogen; species of weeds belonging to the same family reacted differently to the pathogen. Although some weeds suffered very conspicuous vascular discoloration, they did not show any external symptoms: this complicate their identification as hosts of the pathogen in the field. Elimination of weeds at the time of crop rotation is suggested as a possible method of controlling the Verticillium Wilt in tomatoes.
