Avaliou-se qualitativa e quantitativamente a população bacteriana interna em cana sadia e inoculada com Xanthomonas albilineans (ASHBY) Dowson, e estudou-se, in vivo e in vitro, as relações entre o patógeno e Erwinia herbicola (Lohnis) Dye e/ou Pseudomonas sp. As populações bacterianas residentes internamente no colmo sadio e doente foram diferentes. Nos experimentos de relações em laboratório, comparou-se o crescimento das três bactérias em caldo de Wilbrink-metionina e em filtrado da cultura de E. herbicola (FEh), e do patógeno, em filtrado da cultura de Pseudomonas sp. O FEh favoreceu o crescimento de X. albilineans e inibiu a Pseudomonas sp e seu próprio crescimento. Este efeito aumentou com maior concentração de talos na cultura filtrada de E. herbicola e diminuiu com aquecimento. O filtrado de Pseudomonas sp. inibiu o crescimento do patógeno. Em casa de vegetação, plantas de milho doce (Cuba), mostraram diminuição crescente de sintomas externos de Escaldadura das Folhas, quando foram inoculadas com X. albilineans mais E. herbicola viva, morta ou com o seu filtrado (FEh). Este efeito foi diretamente relacionado com a concentração de E. herbicola e inversamente a de X. albilineans. Em cana-de-açúcar (NA56-79) a inoculação de X. albilineans, em mistura com E. herbicola e ou Pseudomonas sp produziu a diminuição dos sintomas internos de Escaldadura das Folhas. A inibição aumentou com maior concentração de E. herbicola quando as duas bactérias não patogênicas foram preinoculadas, antes de X. albilineans, seus efeitos nos sintomas internos foram concordantes com as relações observadas in vitro. Sugere-se que estas relações têm conexão com a variabilidade dos resultados da inoculação de caldo bruto, em cultivares de cana-de-açúcar, nos testes de resistência à doença e que, acontecendo no campo, constituem um dos fatores que intervém na produção de surtos da Escaldadura das Folhas.

ln this work, qualitative and quantitative internal bacterial population of healthy sugarcane plants and others that had been inoculated with Xanthomonas albilineans (Ashby) DAWSON were evaluated; also in vivo and in vitro studies were performed in connection with the relationships between the pathogen and Erwinia herbicola (Lohms) Dye and/or with Pseudomonas sp. Bacterial populations living inside healthy and diseased stalks were differente. ln laboratory experiments of relationship, the growth of three bacterias were compared in the Wilbrinks methionine broth, filtrate of Erwinia herbicola (FEh) culture and in the filtrate of Pseudomonas sp. culture. The FEh inhanced the growth of X. albilineans but inhibited Pseudomonas sp. This effect increased with higher concentration of cells in the filtrate culture of Erwinia herbicola and decreased with heating. In the greenhouse, sweet corn showed decrescent external symptoms of leaf scald when X. albilineans were inoculated mixed with Erwinia herbicola alive or dead or its filtrate. This effect was directly related to the concentration of Erwinia herbicola and inversely proportional to the concentration of X. albilineans. Inoculating X. albilineans mixed with E. herbicola or Pseudomonas sp in sugarcane variety NA56-79 caused a reduction of the internal symptoms of leaf scald. Inhibition increased with higher concentrations of E. herbicola. When the two non-pathogenic bactéria were preinoculated in the plants before X. albilineans, internal symptoms of the disease were inhanced with E. herbicola and reduced with Pseudomonas. It is hereby suggested that these relationships have a connection with the variations noted in the inoculation results obtained from sugarcane varieties inoculated with diseased cane juice during the resistence tests to this desease, and, assuming that, if happens in the field, they should constitute one of factors which interfere in the production of leaf scald in epiphytotic level.
